Residuals in working memory: processes involved and social context

In this talk, I will begin by discussing the cognitive processes that support performance in a working memory task. Through several experiments, we will see how the study of residual performance allows to test the existence of these processes. In a second part, I will show how this knowledge can help to better understand how the social context influences working memory. More precisely, we will see that the presence of the experimenter influences some processes in working memory while others do not seem to be sensitive to it. In conclusion, I will argue in favour of a social cognition that relies on precise models issued from cognitive psychology rather than on more general metaphors such as the notion of "resources".
