In this article, we aim to examine how blind people perceive and represent the spatial properties of their environment. First, we will study how spatial properties are processed by tactile perception. We will then discuss research on the elaboration of representations, using this data on perceptions. Studies on how these representations are perceived, portrayed, and translated in drawing have shown the influence that haptic perceptive and sensorimotor processes have on the development of blind peoples’ mental representations. Finally, we will discuss how these specific perceptive processes contribute to facilitating access and recognition of tactile illustrations in tactile books for blind children.
